Storyteller Steven Gregory and musician Reiko Obata bring to life Japanese, African, African-American, Latin American, and other world folktales. We offer educational programs that can be separately focused or a combination of two or three cultures, such as:
- Musical Folktales from Japan
- African and African-American Musical Folktales
- Musical Folktales from Asia & Africa
- Musical Folktales from Around the World
We wear traditional clothing and use authentic ethnic instruments. The stories are accompanied by the Japanese koto (13-string zither), African drums, mbira (thumb piano), shakers, and other instruments. Discussion, singing, and hands-on audience participation further enrich an understanding of other cultures. Both older and younger audiences will be charmed by these tales, designed to spark the imagination and encourage reading. "Tales Alive! - Musical Folktales Around the World" combines words and music for an unforgettable storytelling experience!
Tales Alive! is one of the most popular storytelling shows in Southern California, performing in schools, libraries, youth clubs, retirement communities, and festivals. Venues they have been featured at include Borders Books, San Diego Folk Heritage Sam Hinton Folk Festival, San Diego Multicultural Festival, UCSD Cultural Celebration, Kroc Center Literacy Fair, El Cajon International Friendship Festival, Carlsbad Multicultural Arts Festival, and Hemet Museum Family Fun Festival.
